The Birth Action Coalition strongly believes that access to birthing options for women and support for her childbirth decisions are a human rights issue. Birthing families must be supported in their rights to full informed consent and to refusal of treatment in order to have access to a fully supportive birth environment.

We strongly support evidence based maternity care & labor management.

BAC supports:

-Access to care providers & hospitals who allow & are supportive of VBAC (vaginal birth aftere cesarean)

-Evidence Based Maternity Care, and Evidence Based policies for management labor & birth & newborn infant care.

-Birthing Environments where care providers obtain full informed consent for all procedures & interventions, and where a womans right to refusal of treatment, and right to choose options outside of "routine" policies is respected by her care provider and entire health care team. *

-Access to the midwifery model of care for all women whether they choose to birth in or out of the hospital.

-Access to care providers who actively support full informed consent for all proposed interventions and procedures, for all birthing women.

-Supportive & professional collaboration between midwives and physicians to ensure quality and safe continuity of care for childbearing women. This includes access to midwives in the hospital, and access to phsicians who support & agree to "back-up" licensed midwives who work with women who will be birthing out of the hospital.

-Hospital policies and protocols which support a physicians obligation to obtain full informed consent, and provide right to refusal of treatment for all birthing women.
